Our Story - We are the Wik peoples

We are fighters - proud and passionate. We’re the oldest people on earth and the last to be discovered. We’ve been connected to this land for at least 65,000 years – it’s in our DNA.

Our skills, traditions and culture were created in this place – and found nowhere else on earth. Our people’s identities and our community’s well-being are tied to the health of our environment. Our way of life depends on our deep connection with our land. And our land depends on us.

Reconnection with our rivers, wetlands and wild spaces will help our people regenerate. Re-engaging with commercial partners respectfully can utilise our invaluable tribal abilities. Revitalising our traditional environmental knowledge can protect this precious place.

Let’s take positive steps forward while never forgetting our past. Let’s share old and new knowledge to make a thriving local economy and proud communities. Let’s come together to reconnect our people to our land in a way that benefits all and show the world it’s possible – together.
